The Tour de Monte Rosa is supposed to be a 150k walk around the mountain peaks of the Monte Rosa, of which Dufourspitze is the highest. However our GPS, as did everyone elses, measured closer to 200k, 198k to be more exact which made many of our days much longer than anticipated.
The northern half of the track is in Switzerland and the southern more rugged half is in Italy Many of the passes are over 3,000 metres. We start our walk in Zermatt, located in a valley between the Monte Rosa massif and the Matterhorn, and walk in a clockwise direction. Most guide books describe the Tour in an anti clockwise direction, however, we chose to leave from Zermatt and head north towards Grachen first, rather than tackle the Theodul pass of 3,300 metres, a climb of almost 2,000 metres, on our first day
