The Chamonix to Zermatt walking route, otherwise known as the Walkers High Route, is a classic mountain hike of around 170k, through Switzerland and France. Our GPS measured 236k. We intend to walk it in reverse, from Zermatt to Chamonix, purely for logistical reasons. We want to do the Tour de Monte Rosa, starting in Zermatt, in mid summer, rather than spring when the weather is much colder and more unpredictable. Most of the overnight stops are in mountain huts, called Cabanes in Switzerland, and refuges in France.
