Thursday 16th August: Weather 19°C to 26°C sunny and hazy
Munich: Depart Abu Dhabi 9.30am, Arrive Munich at 1.30pm, train to city centre
Accommodation: Hotel Monaco Munich
After a hectic morning, we arrive in Munich at 1.30pm and being at the back of the plane, there’s 300 people ahead of us in the custom’s queue - a good time to sit down before joining the queue and booking a few nights in Munich. The Hotel Monaco near Munich HBF station has a booking.com rating of 7.9 and at $125 per night will do. By the time we’ve booked and have done a bit more planning, the queue has dwindled and soon we’re out of customs and buying a train ticket from the airport to Munich city centre.
Hotel Monaco is only 5 minutes walk from the station. It’s clean, comfortable and quiet, and will do for a few nights. Noting to sprout about with no air con and no kettle to have a cup of tea. We’re just glad to be in Europe after a hectic few days so time to spread out our gear, get organised, do a bit of washing and have a shower.
At 6.30pm, it’s time to hit the streets. It’s only a few k walk to Munich’s famed beer Garden Biergarten am Viktualienmarkt, where there’s hundreds of people dining and beering at tables and benches under the trees. This large beer garden serves beer from alternating breweries and there’s a self-service area with classic Bavarian dishes. After two half pints and a plate of German sausage and sauerkraut, we’re strolling back to our hotel, where we stroll into a sports store and pick up a gas can. Back to our hotel. It’s a warm night with no aircon, but very comfortable once the doonas are stripped out of the covers, leaving us with just a sheet covering the bed.
