The cicerone books were very detailed. Gillian Price’s two books, Alta Via 1 and Alta Via 2 Dolomites, plus 50 short walks in the Dolomites, were an excellent authority on hiking in the Dolomites. I had almost no maps, but Lorraine who lived locally, kindly loaned me three Tabacco Maps of the area, plus All Trails were great for providing GPX tracking of hikes other hikers had done and rated.
I had soon identified Cortina in the East and Bolzano in the West of the Dolomites as good centres to stay for a few days. Hikes in these places plus the AV2 hike from Bressanone in the North to Feltre in the South, covered the most interesting parts of the Dolomites.
Our daughter Bonnie, the standby-airline-whiz-kid, worked out that August the 6th from Brisbane to Munich via Doha on QATAR (a partner of Virgin which she works for), looked good.
So that became the plan.
