The Abel Tasman Coast Track, from Marahau to Wainui is 51km (32 mile) long. The track is managed and maintained to a very high standard by the Department of Conservation. It is well-formed and heavy hiking boots are not necessary. In fact, it is more popular than the Milford track because of its accessibility, and many people we saw were walking in thongs, sandals or sneakers. There is no point higher than 200 metres (650 feet).
With the highest tidal range in the country, it was important to take into account tidal crossings that can be impassable at High Tide. In particular the Arawaroa inlet can only be crossed at 2hrs either side of low tide, and with a long 17k walk after the crossing, must be crossed in the morning. Hence the relevant hut at Arawaroa is booked out according to the tides.
