Day Walk: Planning to Walk up to Riten at 1,154m above Bolzano but 35°C was too hot
Accommodation: Villa Anita Apartments Bolzano
Highlights. None. We had planned to hike up to Ritten, 1,154 metres above Bolzano but we awoke to the start of a heatwave. It was already 22°C and expected to go to 35°C so we lolled about planning the next 5 days walk at high Altitude.
The average temperature in Bolzano in late August is 15°C/16°C up to 27°C/28°C, but not this August. The Met Bureau issued a red alert heatwave warning for 15 Italian Cities, including Bolzano. We knew Bolzano would be a bit warmer that higher up in the Dolomites, but not 10°C warmer.
We’ve had to re-arrange our hiking plan to make sure we’re up around 2,000 metres each day for the next 5 days. Bolzano is a lovely city, logistically sound on the Munich train line. It is also central for travelling around the Western Dolomites and has a magnificent bus service. Our apartment called Villa Anita suits us perfectly - kitchenette, fridge, stove and ensuite. Everything was perfect - except the heat!!
