Qatar Q suites - almost 1st Class

The original plan was to fly standby with QATAR from Brisbane to Munich via Doha.  But our eagle-eyed standby-whiz-kid daughter Bonnie, spotted that the Doha to Munich leg was filling up fast, and most flights into Munich on August 6th and 7th were full or oversold.  So the next best option was to fly via Rome, then on a smaller plane with ITA (Italian Airways, the new name for Alitalia) to Munich.  We think that Munich was busy from the pain airports because the football club Bayern Munich was playing Monaco on August 7th in Munich, creating extra loads on air travel into Munich.

Although we travel light, we still need at least one check in bag to hold two hiking back packs, walking poles, and other sharps like scissors and knives.  In the past we have used Chinese laundry bags, but in the past few years we have used old suitcases bought from Vinnies or Salvos which can be left behind if needed.

On Sunday August 6th, Bonnie drove us to Brisbane International airport, and after one hour we scored Business Class in the Q Suites of QATAR into Doha where we waited three hours for the next flight into Rome, again in Business. With a change of airline from QATAR to ITA, We needed to collect our bag in Rome, and we were really pleased to see it drop onto the conveyor belt.  It’s always a worry if the bag gets there or not.  Then a quick walk from Terminal 3 to 1 for the ITA flight to Munich.

After a long walk through Munich airport to the Train station, it took 41 minutes to travel into Munich HBF and from there, our Euro Youth Hotel was just 200 metres down Bayernstrasse and around the corner.  But not before doing a slight detour to the Decathlon sports store near the station to buy two gas gans for our Jetboil.

Our adventure begins.
