Sunday 21st September: Sunny morning, rain late afternoon, 15°C to 20°C
Bern: 12k: 11am to 2.30pm: 3hrs 30 mins walk around Bern via Bremgartenwald
It was supposed to rain all day today but last night there was an almighty thunderstorm that cleared the air and this morning we wake up to a beautiful sunny day. We're meeting Luca and family at 3pm for coffee so time to sleep in til 7am, have a lazy breakfast which is really nice, pack ready to leave tomorrow and wash a few things, then go for a walk at 11am.
We walk down the Kramgasse, a most beautiful street in the old part of Bern. The Old City of Bern is the medieval city centre of Bern, Switzerland. Built on a narrow hill surrounded on three sides by the Aare River, its compact layout has remained essentially unchanged since its construction during the 12th to the 15th century. Despite a major fire in 1405, after which much of the city was rebuilt in sandstone, and substantial construction efforts in the 18th century, Bern's old city has retained its medieval character.
At the end of the street, there's surfers hanging off a cable from the bridge over the fast running Aare River which is running very fast after the torrential rain last night. Our walk takes us around the twisting Aare, leaving it at Felsenau, and following the signs to Bremgarten. But we should have been looking for the Bremgartenwald, the forested area on the ridge above Bern. 30 mins of getting lost before getting back to Bern.
A quick shower and met Luca at the door then a walk up the road to Luca's favourite restaurant, which was closed on a Sunday, so kept on walking to an icecream parlour and had coffee while waiting for Sarina to arrive with baby.
Decided to go out for dinner to a steak house in the centre of Bern. Very nice but like all Switzerland, very expensive. Said our good byes and went back to B and B to pack ready to leave in morning
