Highlight was a fabulous day at Centre Court Wimbledon watching Alcaraz defeat Humbert, Lulu Sun defeat Ranucabu and the best match of the day - Emma Navarro defeated Coco Gauff.
We’re all awake at 6.30am and have a cup of tea. I go for a 10 k walk around the Thames path from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge and detour to buy some sourdough bread at Gail’s in Putney. Then breakfast and shower before we all head off at 9.30am. Robbie is planning to take the District Line from Parson’s Green to Monument, while we take the District Line in the opposite direction from Parson’s Green to Southfields.
Ian and I walk from Southfields to Gate 5 Centre Court and it’s already cold, bleak and raining. Centre Crt doesn’t open until 1.30pm, so we head over to Court 3 to get the best seats at the end of the Court beneath the media box. The covers are already over the court so we have a thermos coffee and croissant while watching the covers come off, then go back on. After 2 hrs at 12.30, the covers come off again and we watch the start of the doubles match between the Skupski and New Zealand's Michael Venus - seeded ninth - who defeated Australia's John Peers and Rinky Hijikata 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 in a match that was repeatedly disrupted by rain. We only stayed for the first set when the skies erupted in a thunderstorm, and we headed over to Centre Court at 2pm to watch Alcaraz defeat the Frenchman Ugo Humbert in four sets. Great tennis and Hubert was unlucky not to win.
Then Lulu Sun comes out to play Ranucabu and that was another great match with Sun winning in 3 sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The croud were behind Ranucabu, but gave Sun a rousing applause when she won. Ranucabu was a bit of a drama queen, feigning some injury when she fell over, took time out, then got up to play as though nothing was wrong. We have a ham sandwich and another cup of thermos tea while waiting for the next match.
The best match followed with Emma Navarro demolishing Coco Gauff in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. There was a moment in the second set when Gauff flipped out and raged at her box. It didn’t go over well with the fans.
It’s 9.30pm when we leave, bum sore from 11 hours of sitting but such a fabulous day. Walking back to Southfields, the night is chilly, but we only have to wait one minute for the train back to Parson’s Green, then briskly walk back to Wyfold Rd to hear about Robbie's exploits around London. He’d been to St Pauls Cathedral, the Borough Markets, Tower Bridge and walked for miles and only got home at 7pm.
Ian’s gnashed calf looks nasty and we re-dress it before bed at midnight.
